rosthodontics with Crown bridge is one among the nine branches of dentistry pertaining to the restoration and maintenance of oral function, comfort, appearance, and health of the patient by the restoration of natural teeth and or by the replacement of missing teeth and craniofacial tissues with artificial substitutes. It consists of mainly four branches namely Removable Prosthodontics, Fixed Prosthodontics, Implant Prosthodontics and Maxillofacial Prosthodontics. It deals with the replacements of teeth with artificial materials to make the smiles look more beautiful and also enables to restore function of the missing teeth Maxillofacial Prosthetics is a sub Speciality of Prosthodontics that deals with patients having defects such as loss of ear, nose, eyes and jaws etc. It also manages aesthetic problems caused by the defects and restore the same.

Prosthodontists are recognized as the diagnosis and treatment planning experts as they develop the overall treatment plan and synchronize treatment sequences with other specialists as well as with the general dentists in order to provide the most comprehensive care.Hence, the role of a Prosthodontist is indispensable to dental practice.

Department of Prosthodontics and Implantology has a separate undergraduate (UG) and post graduate (PG) sections. It has all the equipment’s and infrastructure as per the norms laid by Dental council of India (DCI) and it is Recognized by MOH and FW, Govt of India. The department trains undergraduate students for the BDS program in 2nd, 3rd and 4th year and a complete 3-years program leading to the Master of Dental Surgery (MDS). Advanced surgical equipment like sinus augmentation kits, microsurgical unit, digital intra oral radiographs (RVG), advanced impression materials and diverse implant surgical kits are the additional highlights of the department.

Academics:

Second year BDS students are trained on Preclinical models replicating the clinical situation and students are also well acquainted with different dental materials that are used clinically. Third and Fourth year BDS students are trained to gain skills for treating partially and completely edentulous patients with removable prosthesis and introduction to fixed prosthesis on typhodont models as well as by observing and assisting procedures that are being performed by faculty and post graduate students.

Postgraduate students are given opportunity to learn and master a variety of clinical procedures with fixed and removable prosthesis and special emphasis on Maxillofacial Prosthetic and Surgical Rehabilitation for partially resected jaws Training in various implant systems and clinical exposure is being imparted as part of the curriculum. The department has a well-stocked library with all relevant current books being published. College library is stocked with an array of journals with back volumes spreading over two decades. The post graduate program consists of mandated journal clubs and seminar presentations, participation in the National conferences , CDE’s and Publications . Research is a significant activity and the department’s core areas of research include compatibility and viability of newer prosthetic materials introduced in the recent past, newer techniques and their validity in treating patients in a better way by reducing expenditure and time of the patient, comparison among various implant systems and their longevity in the oral environment and also various treatment procedures.

Department conducted programs such as SEMBLANCE- a hands on course which encourages students from various colleges for training in specialized procedures, SCOUR- a national PG talent search which encourages various PG’s towards research and learning new techniques and Rapid Review Programs which gives an insight and enables the PG’s and UG’s for facing the exams with ease.

Every year in the department celebrates Prosthodontists day on Jan22nd and also Geriatrics day on Oct 1st by conducting essay writing competitions and quiz programs and encourage the students to participate in them and conducts rural health camps in various places and provides free treatment to the needful patients.
